Mashing up search services |

| Abstract: |
Mashup languages, such as Yahoo! Pipes, are offering new graphic interfaces for service compo-sition; while their popularity increases, a growing number of Internet users acquire the ability of using these new languages and paradigms. Normally, composition is limited to simple services, such as RSS or Atom feeds, but visual mashup languages have the potential of being used for more complex service compositions, with typed parameters and well-defined input-output inter-faces.
We specifically distinguish between exact services and search services; exact services return a given number of equally valuable answers, while search services return a variable number of ranked answers. Thus, the composition of search services introduces new issues, such as deter-mining the optimal sequence of search invocations, or composing separately ranked entries into a globally ranked result. We argue that enabling end users to mashup services through suitable ab-stractions and tools is a viable option in order to improve service-based computations. |
